Unranked Irvine Beats No. 1 Mission Viejo

Goalkeeper Lauren O’Grady stopped two penalty kicks in a shootout, lifting Irvine past top-ranked Mission Viejo in a first-round game at the Foothill Excalibur tournament Monday.

Kim Tiampo gave Irvine a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the second half, but Lindsay Honingford tied the score with about 10 minutes remaining.

O’Grady then saved two shots in the shootout and another went wide. Unranked Irvine (4-6-2) made three of four shots, including Megan McCelland’s game-winner.

In the Marina boys’ soccer tournament:

No. 2 Fountain Valley 6, Loara 0--Andrew Hong and Russell Holmes each scored two goals to lead Fountain Valley in the second round. Cliff McKinley and Blake Hardin also scored for the Barons. Kyle Polak made three saves for his eighth shutout this season.

Loara fell to 8-3.

Katella 1, No. 7 Santa Ana 1 (Katella wins on penalty kicks, 7-6)--Katella goalkeeper Eddie Garcia made four saves in the shootout for the Knights, who advanced into today’s quarterfinals against second-ranked Fountain Valley.

Santos Diaz scored in regulation for Katella (8-4).

Dana Hills 0, Cypress 0 (Dana Hills wins on penalty kicks, 4-2)--Mario Compean, Brendan Huiberts, Chris Klotz and Matt Du Hadway scored during the shootout for Dana Hills.

San Clemente 2, Los Alamitos 0--Kris Winrich and Tod Jaramillo scored goals and Nick Viejo-Bueno made four saves in San Clemente’s second-round victory. The Tritons are 7-3-1. The Griffins fell to 6-2-3.

In the Trabuco Hills tournament:

No. 1 Santa Margarita 3, Kennedy 1--Spencer George, Sebastian Galmarini and Ryan Curtis scored for Santa Margarita (10-2-1) in the second-round game. George also scored in an earlier 2-0 victory over Mission Viejo.
