The U.S. Census Bureau will hold open houses next week in Van Nuys, Glendale, Woodland Hills and Santa Clarita to officially mark the beginning of local tallying efforts.

The open houses in the San Fernando Valley and 14 other Census 2000 offices in Los Angeles will coincide with similar events in 24 California counties and Hawaii.

Officials scheduled to address the public at the Valley events include state Sen. Richard Alarcon (D-Sylmar) and Assemblyman Tony Cardenas (D-Sylmar) in Van Nuys, Rep. James E. Rogan (R-Glendale) in Glendale, Councilwoman Laura Chick in Woodland Hills and a representative of state Sen. William J. “Pete” Knight (R-Palmdale) in Santa Clarita.

Census 2000 offices plan to hire hundreds of people to work as enumerators, each spending six to eight weeks knocking on doors of residents who fail to return questionnaires by the April 1 deadline, according to census officials.

Letters describing the census process will be sent in early March to all residential addresses, at which time recipients may ask for questionnaires in Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean or Tagalog.

The questionnaires will be mailed to homes in the second half of March and should take about 15 minutes to fill out, said Anthony Greno of the Los Angeles Regional Census Center.
