Low-income women who are at least 40 years old can make a free long-distance telephone call when they have a breast cancer screening at the Orange Senior Center on Thursday. The nonprofit Susan G. Komen Foundation, which funds the ENCOREplus screening program, is working with Samsung/Sprint PCS to offer the free phone calls.

Participants may call any other woman, locally or long-distance. Komen officials hope women will urge their friends and family members to get breast exams. Breast cancer is the leading killer of women between 35 and 54; the Komen Foundation estimates that about 365 Orange County women will die from it this year.

The screening and phone banks will be offered at the center, 170 S. Olive St., from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. To schedule a screening, call: (714) 806-2037.
