Steve Jaros of Bolingbrook, Ill., rolled only the 13th televised 300 game in PBA history en route to winning the Chattanooga Open in Tennessee. Jaros got $10,000 for the 300 and $17,000 for first place. . . . Detroit made it 5-0 for baseball owners in salary arbitration this year when outfielder Brian Hunter was awarded $1.75 million rather than the $2.75 million he requested.

Golf

Greg Norman shot a 66 to close to two strokes behind leader Craig Spence, entering the final round of the Australian Masters at Melbourne. Norman is one stroke ahead of New Zealand’s Greg Turner and Australia’s Peter McWhinney. Spence shot a 69.

New Chicago Bear President Ted Phillips says the team is no longer interested in looking for a new home outside the city. He wants meet with Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley to negotiate a new Soldier Field lease, then find a site in Chicago for a new stadium.

An NFL Players Assn. committee recommended a two-year suspension of agent James Gould’s license. Gould was accused of supplying Michigan safety Marcus Ray with food, access to a stadium sky box and help with paying for hotel rooms. The NFLPA also recommended a $15,000 fine.
