SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A man suspected of stalking and shooting an Anaheim woman was found dead Wednesday night, apparently of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

Police said Alton Cannon, 47, shot and wounded his estranged girlfriend at her home on North Beth Street in Anaheim just before 7 a.m. as she was leaving for work.

Officers tracked him to his home in Corona. The house was surrounded, and authorities tried through the day to contact him but with no success, Anaheim Police Sgt. Joe Vargas said.

At 9:40 p.m. officers entered the house and found Cannon dead on the second floor, Vargas said.

“We’re speculating that he came straight here and did that,” Vargas said.

The woman, whom authorities did not identify, apparently drove to work and called 911 from there, Vargas said. He said the woman recently had obtained a restraining order against Cannon.

“She feared for her life, so she drove to work, to a safe place,” he said. “She did all the right things.”

The woman was transported to Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Anaheim, where she was treated for a gunshot wound to her arm, officials said.

Cannon worked as an auditor at the Orange County assessor’s office in Santa Ana.
