L.A. Times Names New Theater Critic

Michael Phillips has been named theater critic of the Los Angeles Times.

Phillips, 37, has been theater critic for the St. Paul (Minn.) Pioneer Press for the last year, and in 1998 was a juror on the committee that selects the Pulitzer Prize for drama.

He served as theater critic for the San Diego Union-Tribune from 1993 to 1997, and as an arts writer at that paper from 1990 to 1993. He was the theater critic and a film reviewer at the Dallas Times Herald from 1987 to 1990.

He also has written extensively for publications such as the Wall Street Journal, Variety, In These Times, Stagebill, American Theater and The Times and has reviewed film and theater for public radio in Minnesota and Texas.

A native of Kenosha, Wis., Phillips studied theater and journalism at the University of Minnesota and graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in journalism.

Phillips will join the staff Feb. 15.
