Two University of Idaho football players were arrested early Thursday during an after-hours melee outside a downtown Boise bar after their Humanitarian Bowl victory over Southern Mississippi.

Officers arrested freshman starting nose tackle Wil Beck, 19, of Veradale, Wash., for underage consumption of alcohol, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and obstructing officers. Junior offensive lineman Keith Cosseboom, 22, of Spokane, Wash., also was arrested in connection with the fight that involved some 100 people celebrating the Vandals’ 42-35 upset victory.

Hal Mumme, who led Kentucky to today’s Outback Bowl against Penn State, its first New Year’s Day bowl in nearly a half-century, was given a five-year, $4-million contract. . . . Hawaii Coach June Jones hired Mike Cavanagh, a member of his staff with the San Diego Chargers, to coach the Rainbows’ offensive line. . . . A tour bus carrying members of a Wisconsin high school marching band to the Citrus Bowl parade rear-ended another bus full of band members, sending at least 26 people to the hospital. The buses were moving slowly and none of the injuries was serious, said Sgt. Eric Pedersen, a spokesman for the Orlando Police Department.
