Moses Malone Jr., son of the former NBA great, said he’s leaving the University of Houston because of displeasure with Coach Clyde Drexler.

“I’m not going into it. I know what the problem is. They [the coaches]) know what the problem is. I’ve got to look out for my future. I’ve got to go somewhere else,” Malone told television station KRIV-TV.

Malone has played in nine of the Cougars’ 11 games, but started only one and is averaging just over 10 minutes a game.

“It’s very disappointing. I thought about it last night, and it makes you want to cry--how something so good can turn out to be something so bad,” Malone said.

Drexler was unavailable for comment.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Coach David Wells stepped down after 25 years as he recovers from surgery to treat throat cancer. He will continue as athletic director once his recovery is complete.

Fifth-year assistant Ken Scalmanini will take over. Along with being the winningest coach in school history (318-297), Wells led his teams to six Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Assn. titles and six NCAA playoff appearances.
