The Huntington Beach Fire Department recently invited volunteers for Project SHIP--Senior Home Inspection Program--to an appreciation dinner acknowledging their help in 1998. The volunteers conducted 148 home safety inspections, totaling 295 hours. Since the program’s inception in August 1996, more than 800 inspections have been completed.

During the inspection, the volunteers check the home for fire and other hazards. They also test the smoke detectors, replacing the battery if needed. If homes don’t have detectors, volunteers install one for free. Volunteers also educate senior residents on fire safety and earthquake preparedness.
