City Extends Earthquake Rebuilding Ordinance
The Los Angeles City Council approved a one-year extension of an ordinance streamlining paperwork for reconstruction projects to help property owners who have yet to finish repairs five years after the Northridge earthquake.
Under the ordinance, which was set to expire Jan. 17, the fifth anniversary of the quake, property owners would be allowed to rebuild certain nonconforming uses without having to acquire conditional-use permits and zone variances.
In addition, the ordinance waived certain planning fees for reconstruction projects, said Deputy Planning Director Franklin Eberhard.
“We had quite a few [projects] right after the earthquake,” Eberhard said. “We’ve only had half a dozen recently.”
Councilman Nate Holden introduced the motion, saying some of his constituents have still not completed rebuilding projects because of problems outside their control, including delays in getting building permits.
The ordinance is now scheduled to expire Jan. 17, 2000.
