NEWPORT BEACH
West Newport residents have a vision for their community: to move phone, electric and cable television wires from aboveground poles to beneath the streets. Lido Sands resident Dana Kroeger is leading the movement to beautify the western part of the city. A majority of property owners have signed petitions backing the effort, but the city traditionally asks for 60% of homeowners to endorse such ideas. Once signatures are presented to City Council members, they will consider earmarking funds for an engineer’s estimate and formal plans. The cost is projected at $6,000 to $10,000 per parcel. Councilwoman Janice A. Debay, active in pushing for the project, said the council should hear the issue by February.
