Surprise Starter Stops Stars’ Streak

Fred Brathwaite, making his first NHL start in three years, made 21 saves for his first shutout as the injury-riddled Calgary Flames stunned Dallas, 1-0, Friday night at Calgary, ending the Stars’ 15-game undefeated streak.

Jeff Shantz scored the lone goal at 9:11 of the second period.

Four Calgary goaltenders are out because of injuries, so Brathwaite was signed to a contract Thursday from the Canadian national team.

Dallas’ unbeaten streak was the longest since Philadelphia went 14-0-3 from during the 1996-97 season.

Ottawa 5, Tampa Bay 1--Shawn McEachern scored two goals, and Alexei Yashin added a goal and two assists as the Senators stretched their unbeaten streak to seven games with a victory over the Lighting at Kanata, Canada.

Daniel Alfredsson and Magnus Arvedson each scored once for Ottawa, and goalie Ron Tugnutt made 19 saves for his 100th NHL victory.

Vancouver 1, Florida 1--The Canucks and Panthers traded second-period goals and skated to a tie at Vancouver. Mark Messier scored for Vancouver, and Scott Mellanby scored for Florida.

New Jersey left wing Dave Andreychuk underwent surgery to have pins inserted into a broken right ankle after X-rays showed the injury was more serious than the team thought. Andreychuk broke his ankle in the first period Tuesday against San Jose. . . . The Chicago Blackhawks traded right wing Dennis Bonvie to Philadelphia for left wing Frank Bialowas. Bialowas has played in three NHL games in his career, and Bonvie played in 11 games for the Blackhawks after being claimed from Edmonton in the NHL waiver draft Oct. 5.
