A front company for oil and automotive interests known as National City Lines bought up and dismantled 1,500 urban light-rail systems and replaced them with road-based systems over several decades. NCL, GM, Firestone and several other firms were convicted on antitrust charges in 1946. However the token fines of $5,000 each did not impede their progress.

Red Car fans can remember riding the rails right now at the Red Car Museum in Seal Beach. The Seal Beach Historical and Cultural Society has refurbished Tower Car No. 1734 and parked it permanently on the greenbelt near Main Street, where the 40-mile Pacific Electric L.A.-to-Newport line operated from 1904 to 1950.
