Anderson told reporters that he shortened his normal follow through because a Falcon defender ran into him. Officials ruled that both of Anderson’s feet were on the ground before the contact, meaning that there was no interference with the kick.

“I’m not going to argue with the officials,” Anderson said.

Asked if he believed he will be remembered for the one he missed instead of the 39 he made this season, he said, “That’s part of field-goal kicking. You have to be a man about it.

“When you’re a field-goal kicker, that’s your job--to line up and fire those field goals. Unfortunately, that one didn’t go through. Most of them have, which makes this one bitterly disappointing.”

At least one Falcon knew Anderson was due to miss. “Tony Martin said to me all week that Gary Anderson was going to miss a field goal and that was going to be the difference,” Atlanta running back Jamal Anderson said, revealing a conversation he had last week with the Falcon wide receiver.

“When Anderson lined up for the field goal, Tony said this was going to be the one to miss. You can’t be perfect all season. When he missed that field goal, it was like destiny.”
