Dominguez 64, Mater Dei 58--Dominguez, which lost to Mater Dei last month on a three-point basket at the buzzer, avenged the defeat before 6,000 in the featured game of the seven-game invitational.
But there were a few nervous moments in the final seconds for the state’s top-ranked team, which squandered a 17-point third-quarter lead.
With his team trailing, 62-58, Mater Dei guard Steve Scoggin stepped to the line for two free throws after Dominguez drew a technical foul with 19.9 seconds left for calling a timeout when it had none remaining.
But Scoggin, a 77% free-throw shooter, missed both attempts. Dominguez center Tyson Chandler blocked the Monarchs’ final shot.
Marcus Moore, a senior guard who transferred from Redondo this year, scored a team-high 14 points for Dominguez (14-2). Mater Dei, ranked fourth in the state, fell to 18-3.
