The year’s first rainfall began falling Tuesday night in western Ventura County, and more could be on the way.

The National Weather Service was calling for a 40% chance of showers throughout today along the coast and a 60% likelihood in mountain areas.

High temperatures throughout the county are forecast in the upper 50s with lows in the low 50s. The chance of more showers was expected to decrease by 6 tonight. The snow level will drop to 7,000 feet.

“This is normal,” said Bruce Rockwell, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard. “What was unusual was that month we didn’t get any rain” from mid-December to mid-January.

Rockwell said no rain is forecast for Thursday.
