“Gilbert is the greatest,” a Grant High student shouted from the bleachers Wednesday as All-City guard Gilbert Arenas displayed his latest offensive wizardry.
Arenas scored 42 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to help the Lancers knock off Poly, 90-69, in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Grant.
It was the sixth game this season in which Arenas has scored 40 or more points. Eight other times he has scored at least 30 points. He is averaging 35.7 points per game.
Guard Daniel Tarr added 22 points for Grant (14-4, 2-1 in league play), ranked No. 10 in the region by The Times.
James Word, a senior guard, scored 26 points for Poly (8-9, 2-1). Word was academically ineligible last season and ineligible for Poly’s first 14 games this season.
Now that he’s back, Coach Jay Werner has a player capable of lifting Poly to a Mid-Valley League title.
