Free-agent forward Loy Vaught, who has spent his entire eight-year career with the Clippers, agreed to a five-year contract with the Detroit Pistons worth about $23 million, his agent told Bloomberg News.

Vaught played in only 10 games for the Clippers last season because of a degenerative disk in his back, although agent Jim McDowell said he’s sound now.

“This is a good fit for the Pistons and for Loy,” McDowell said.

Vaught’s signing could be announced today when the league reopens for business after it completed a new collective bargaining agreement with its players. The Pistons declined to comment, citing league rules that prohibit them from making any announcements until then.

Vaught, 31, is considered one of the best rebounders in the NBA. The Pistons were 15th in defensive rebounding and 13th in offensive rebounding last season.

Vaught has averaged 11.9 points and eight rebounds a game during his career.

He’s returning home to Michigan, where he played for the University of Michigan and started on the Wolverines’ 1989 NCAA championship team.
