SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A 21-year-old Anaheim woman was killed Sunday morning when the driver of the car she was in lost control on a San Diego County freeway, bounced off the center guardrail and plowed down an embankment into a tree, the California Highway Patrol said.

Jackeline Romero-Guzman suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, CHP officer Mark Gregg said.

The driver of the vehicle, Alexis Barrientos, 21, also of Anaheim, was booked on suspicion of manslaughter and drunk driving, Gregg said.

She was treated for minor injuries.

Two other passengers, Jerry Chacon, 20, and his brother Mario Chacon, 18, both of Anaheim, were listed in serious condition Sunday with head and leg injuries at Scripps Memorial Hospital.

The group apparently was returning to Orange County around 7 a.m. after a night of partying in San Diego, when Barrientos passed out behind the wheel and lost control of her Honda Civic, Gregg said.

The car, traveling at a high speed, hit the center guardrail on the northbound Interstate (5) Freeway, north of Highway 52, then careened across four freeway lanes down an embankment and into a tree, Gregg said.
