A 120-room inn on the cliffs just north of San Diego has found a novel way to motivate guests to explore the natural beauty of its surroundings.

L’Auberge Del Mar offers a Take a Hike weekend package that includes a fanny pack stuffed with a disposable camera, energy bars, bottled water and a trail guide to the Torrey Pines State Reserve a few miles down the coast from the hotel. A $635 two-night stay for two also includes two one-hour massages in the hotel’s spa, giving hikers the opportunity to have their sore muscles soothed.

The Torrey Pines State Reserve is a 2,000-acre oasis of ancient and rare pines, migratory birds and dramatic sea cliffs. Its hiking trails, bordered with wildflowers, wind through striking sandstone formations. Viewing platforms at bluff’s edge are excellent sites for observing the migration of gray whales and dolphins below.
