Center to Help Poor Launch Businesses
A Ventura job-placement center has launched a program to help poor people start their own businesses.
The Employment Aptitude and Placement Assn., which was founded by the Rev. Luthur McCurtis and is now run by his son, Michael, still emphasizes finding jobs for workers but now also trains them for positions that require computer and technological skills.
Under the new program, the jobs center plans to offer them grants to begin computer-based businesses, as money becomes available.
The center also helps find homes for the needy and provides them with food and clothing.
“We’ve always been known for going the extra mile, whether that means watching someone’s children while they go in for their interview or giving them the bus fare to make it there,” Michael McCurtis said.
The jobs center is at 660 N. Ventura Ave. Companies with job openings should call 648-5868 or fax 648-7798. Anyone seeking help may call weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
