30 Hurt in Crash on Roller Coaster
PITTSBURGH — At least 30 people were injured in a collision between two trains on the Thunderbolt roller coaster at Kennywood Park, park officials said Friday.
The accident occurred Thursday night as one train was about to leave the station and another train that had just completed the loop failed to stop, striking the back of the first train.
Kennywood officials said in a statement Friday that some passengers were treated for injuries at the scene and that 30 were taken to hospitals and treated for various injuries, including whiplash, bruises or cuts.
One passenger was treated for an abdominal injury.
The accident is under investigation and the ride was closed indefinitely.
The Thunderbolt is normally operated by six attendants. The ride uses both an automatic and a manual braking system.
Trains travel about 55 mph.
