Asa Carlsson of Sweden upset second-seeded Magui Serna of Spain, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3, on the second day of the WTA clay-court women’s tennis tournament in Palermo, Sicily.

Brandis Braverman, a 19-year-old from Newport Beach, pulled off her second consecutive upset at the A&P; Tennis Classic/USTA Women’s $50,000 Challenger in Mahwah, N.J., beating 1998 NCAA singles champion Vanessa Webb, 6-2, 6-3. Monday, Braverman knocked off fifth-seeded and 114th-ranked Nana Miyagi of Japan, 0-6, 6-2, 6-0, in the first round.

Dan Bohannon of Orange defeated Jerry Deainza of Irvine, 6-1, 6-0, to advance to the third round of the men’s 50-and-over-division at the U.S. Tennis Assn. Hardcourt Tennis Tournament at Lindborgh Racquet Club in Huntington Beach.

Bohannon and his brother, Dave Bohannon of Long Beach, who also won his singles match Tuesday, will be among the favorites when doubles play begins today.

Orange County surfers had a successful opening day at the Professional Surfing Tour of America stop at San Onofre Beach.

Noah Budroe (Capistrano Beach), Jeff Deffenbaugh (Huntington Beach) and Iain McPhillips (Capistrano Beach) won their heats in three to four-foot waves. They advanced to Thursday’s second round, along with second-place finishers Scott Finn (Dana Point), Jim Hogan (San Clemente), Mike Parsons (San Clemente) and Benji Severson (San Clemente). Today’s qualifying round begins at 10 a.m.
