A 49-year-old man died Monday after losing control of his tractor-trailer and striking a concrete pillar along the southbound Golden State Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Jagtar Gill of British Columbia crossed the freeway from the slow lane to the center median near the Zoo Drive overpass about 1 a.m., striking a support pillar. He died from his injuries, said CHP spokesman Frank Sansone.

Gill’s trailer was carrying processed meat, which was thrown onto several north and southbound freeway lanes, Sansone said. Two lanes in both directions were closed for three hours to clean up the freeway.
