Pedestrian Struck by Car in Santa Ana
A pedestrian was seriously injured Tuesday night when he was struck by a car near the intersection of 1st and Jackson streets in Santa Ana, police said.
The man, who was not identified, suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to UCI Medical Center in Orange, Sgt. Bruce Leamer said.
The pedestrian’s identity and medical condition were unavailable. Details of the incident, which occurred about 9:16 p.m., also were not known late Tuesday and are still under investigation, Leamer said.
Six pedestrians have been killed this year in Santa Ana, the same total recorded for all of 1998. Santa Ana has the highest pedestrian death rate in Southern California and the third highest in the state, according to a traffic safety study by UC Irvine.
The city in March began a major enforcement effort that includes added jaywalking patrols and a crackdown on motorists who fail to yield to pedestrians. The Santa Ana police also have proposed a law to prohibit pedestrians from waiting on traffic medians as they make their way across a busy street, a move they hope will prevent deaths and injuries.
