Probe Begins After Rabid Bat Is Found

A rabid bat has been found on the Hueneme High School campus, and an investigation has been launched by the Ventura County Public Health Agency to determine whether anyone had contact with it.
The bat, which was found alive last weekend, was lying on the ground by the campus football field. It was taken by the animal regulation department and officials determined it was rabid.
Anyone who was near the bat is urged to call the health agency immediately and be evaluated for a rabies immunization, health officials said Friday.
The communicable disease office can be reached at 652-3364.
Health officials say if you suspect exposure to rabies, wash the contaminated area with soap and water and contact a physician or health official for treatment. The animal regulation department can be reached at 388-4341 to report animal bites or seek help in picking up sick animals.
