405-101 Interchange
In a stunning, yet consistent, display of shortsightedness, Caltrans has announced plans to add two lanes to the overcrowded 405-101 interchange. This ill-planned effort will cost millions of dollars, do less than nothing to relieve the congestion on these two freeways and will be obsolete before construction begins. Initially it will appear to alleviate congestion but that will be after approximately two years of construction delays in the same area. That honeymoon will last for about a month and then it will be back to congestion and frustration as usual.
This situation is well past a Band-Aid. It needs a real solution--perhaps elevated rail lines a la the Green Line on the 105 Freeway. Thousands of commuter cars could be eliminated daily by this pollution-free solution and the positive effects would be permanent.
