Diamondbacks Keep on Rolling
SAN DIEGO — Luis Gonzalez hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the San Diego Padres, 4-3, Tuesday night for the seventh win in eight games.
Arizona starter Andy Benes was hit in the right arm by Woody Williams’ liner leading off the third and was taken to a hospital for further examination. There was no immediate report on his condition.
Tony Gwynn went two for five to move within 10 hits of 3,000, one ahead of Tampa Bay’s Wade Boggs, but lined out to end the game. Gwynn hit his 507th career double in the first, moving past Babe Ruth for 31st place on the career doubles list, then added a single in the sixth.
Gregg Olson (5-4), the fifth Arizona pitcher, went 1 2-3 innings to send the Padres to their fifth straight loss. In their last eight games, the Diamondbacks have allowed only 10 earned runs in 72 innings.
Matt Mantei pitched the ninth for his 17th save, his seventh in eight chances with the Diamondbacks since joining them on July 9.
