Blue Jays Get Segui in Trade

First baseman David Segui was dealt from the Seattle Mariners to the Toronto Blue Jays for pitchers Tom Davey and Steve Sinclair.

Segui, 33, is batting .293 in 90 games with 22 doubles, three triples, nine home runs and 39 runs batted in.

Segui refused to talk to reporters.

“He’s going to be a free agent at the end of the year. We got a couple of good young pitchers for him,” Mariner Manager Lou Piniella said.

Catcher Lenny Webster, released by Baltimore earlier this month, was signed by the Boston Red Sox. . . . More than 200 people packed a public meeting held by the Red Sox, many criticizing the team’s plan to build a new stadium across from Fenway Park. The team has said that renovating the 87-year-old park would not be feasible and has instead proposed a $545-million stadium project nearby. . . . Left-hander Mike Sirotka and the Chicago White Sox agreed to a contract extension covering at least the next two years. . . . Two championship rings that once belonged to Ted Williams were ordered returned to the baseball great’s son, John-Henry Williams, by U.S. District Judge William Young in Boston. The rings had been sold to a sports memorabilia dealer by a man who had stored them at his home.
