1 Holiday Weekend Traffic Death in County

The holiday weekend in Ventura County brought one traffic fatality and 21 arrests on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol between 6 p.m. Friday and 6 p.m. Monday, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Some arrests occurred at a sobriety checkpoint on California 126 conducted late Saturday and early Sunday by the CHP and Santa Paula police.

Statewide this weekend, the CHP reported 32 traffic fatalities and 1,348 arrests on suspicion of driving under the influence.

No traffic fatalities occurred in the county over Memorial Day weekend last year; the number of DUI arrests was not available. Statewide, there were 23 fatalities and 1,349 arrests.

The sole fatality in the county occurred Sunday morning when a motorcycle driven by 46-year-old Dana Hoover of Westlake Village collided with a sport utility vehicle on California 33, 11 miles south of Pine Mountain Camp Road, officers said.

Hoover died at the scene.

The other driver, 39-year-old Bobby Hernandez of Ventura, and his passengers were not injured.
