The Huntington Beach City School District has asked staff to examine whether students should be charged for riding the school bus. The district will spend about $140,000 more this year than what the state provides for fuel, maintenance and drivers. Trustees have scheduled an informational meeting June 10 to discuss the issue. If approved, the fees could go into effect as soon as next spring semester.

The district wouldn’t be the first in the area to make such a move. Students from the Fountain Valley School District pay $1 each school day for a round trip, or 50 cents one way. That is half of what it would cost a student to take a public transportation bus to school. Countywide, about a quarter of the districts ask students to pay a fee for riding the bus. The informational meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at district headquarters, 20451 Craimer Lane.
