Keeping with family tradition, he attended the University of Colorado at Boulder and was a fan of the Colorado Buffaloes football team. Loughman joined the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and was lifelong friends with many members.

He attended law school at UCLA.

For the past 35 years, Loughman worked for Dean Witter in Oxnard as a stockbroker, account executive and vice president.

Fly-fishing and golf were Loughman’s great passions. He enjoyed many fly-fishing trips to the Sierras, the Rockies and Canada.

In the three weeks before his death, Loughman and some of his fraternity brothers played many historic golf courses in Ireland. He returned from his trip on the Saturday before his death.

Glenn Fitzgerald, a Morgan Stanley vice president and friend for 27 years, said, “Some people collect things, but B.J. collected people. He was very warm, friendly, had sharp wit and a tremendous number of friends.”

Loughman is survived by his mother, Alice Loughman of Ventura; two sons, Bernard “B.J.” Loughman III of Ventura and Christopher of San Diego; a brother, Anthony Loughman of Ventura; his former wife, Cynthia Loughman of Ventura; and three grandchildren.
