Oxnard School Trustees

* Re “District’s Transfer of Administrator Raises Questions,” May 24.

The recent turn of events at the Oxnard Union High School District and the Oxnard School District seems to be a return to the turbulent 1970s. At that time, both boards acted consistently to disregard the wishes of their respective constituencies.

The high school trustees chose to spend more than $100,000 of the district’s funds to defend their position--unsuccessfully. The transfer of Oxnard High School Principal Daisy Tatum seems to smack of the same kind of wrongheaded arrogance and stubbornness.

This same holds true for the elementary school district’s decision to transfer Frank Intermediate School Principal Pete Nichols. Both of these principals have demonstrated their ability to lead their respective schools in a more than exemplary manner. To remove these principals at the height of their careers seems to me callous at best in light of the respect and support they have received from the community.

Although I think recalls should be a last resort, there does need to be a loud and clear message sent to these boards that their actions, as they have been explained thus far, will not stand. Boards that act above the wishes of the community pay a high price--and so will the community.
