Just three weeks before he is scheduled to leave office, City Councilman Richard Alatorre was honored Monday by about 150 business and community leaders who thanked him for three decades of work as an elected official.

Alatorre was honored during a luncheon at Boyle Height’s Hollenbeck Youth Center.

Director Danny Hernandez said that with the councilman’s support, the center has been able to help thousands of teenagers stay away from gangs.

An emotional Alatorre received a boxing championship-style belt from 1984 Olympic gold medalist Paul Gonzales. Some in the crowd cheered, “You are the people’s champion.”

‘I’m honored that the youth center and community organizations have taken the time to honor me. I’m touched,” Alatorre said.

“Councilman Alatorre has given our community 28 years of dedicated service. This luncheon is our way of expressing gratitude to him,” Hernandez said.

“The councilman may be retiring, but we know that his legacy will continue.”
