The group that was denied permission in April to hang Vietnamese and American flags along Bolsa Avenue to remember the fall of Saigon is now asking the City Council for permission to hold a Vietnamese Armed Forces Day event June 20. The council will consider the special event permit request from the U.S. Army Rangers Assn. at tonight’s meeting. The group drew controversy with its April request because some local veterans thought the proposed flag display was disrespectful to the American flag. But some local Vietnamese groups said that the April decision was in retaliation for two months of protests that took place along Bolsa Avenue in opposition to a store owner’s display of Communist symbols. The Rangers group expects 500 people to attend or participate in its event--which will include handing out awards to Vietnamese students--at the Westminster Civic Center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The council meeting starts at 7 p.m., 8200 Westminster Blvd. Information: (714) 898-3311.
