While Eduardo Berumen sat inside a Santa Paula restaurant having breakfast Friday morning, two boys stole his company pickup truck after finding the keys dangling in the ignition, police said.

The teens stole a 1997 Dodge at about 9 a.m. from the parking lot of a Mexican food cafe in the 300 block of Peck Road, Santa Paula Police Sgt. Steven Carter said.

Berumen was eating with a co-worker from Santa Paula’s Limoneira Co. and they saw the boys take the truck, Carter said. The pair chased the boys in a car and used a cellular telephone to call police.

The thieves abandoned the vehicle at Wordsworth Way and Thoreau Lane next to the Government Center in Ventura and fled on foot, Carter said.

Sheriff’s deputies stopped two juveniles matching the description of the thieves but Berumen refused to identify either boy, Carter said.

“He said he didn’t want to send anybody to jail,” Carter said.

There were no arrests as of Friday night.
