San Antonio Results Mixed

Even when things go well in San Antonio these days, it doesn’t seem to last long.

A lineup change sparked the Missions’ offense, and they beat Midland, 10-5, on Wednesday and banged out 26 hits in a 23-8 victory over Midland on Thursday in double-A Texas League play. Second baseman Hiram Bocachica, who was moved to fifth in the lineup, was six for six, hitting for the cycle Thursday.

But the winning streak was short-lived. On Friday, Midland battered San Antonio starter Robbie Beckett for eight runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings and won, 14-2.

On Saturday, the Missions’ pitching and defense failed again in a 10-8 loss. Allen Davis took the mound Sunday and only gave up two earned runs in six innings, but four unearned runs were San Antonio’s downfall in a 6-4 loss.

The Missions (28-36) were officially eliminated from the first-half race with their loss on Saturday.

Albuquerque (29-35)--With Pacific Coast League triple-crown candidate Brent Cookson’s call-up to the Dodgers last week, Shawn Gilbert is the main offensive weapon for the Dukes. Gilbert has been hot in June, hitting .352 (19 for 54). Gilbert, who plays outfield and third base, is leading the league with 22 doubles and is tied for second with 50 runs scored. He is hitting .333 with five homers, 28 runs batted in and 14 steals.

Vero Beach (25-42)--Four Dodgers were selected to the Florida State League All-Star game on June 19: outfielder Wynter Phoenix, third baseman Damian Rolls, catcher David Ross and relief pitcher Brent Husted. Phoenix leads the league with a .359 batting average and a .483 on-base percentage.

San Bernardino (37-27)--The Stampede is tied for first with Rancho Cucamonga in the California League’s South Division. First baseman Robb Gorr and outfielder Chin-Feng Chen are providing the offense. Gorr is fourth in the league with a .340 average and is fifth with 46 RBIs. One of the players Gorr is chasing in the RBI race is Chen, who is second in the league with 52.
