McDonald’s, which has 123 restaurants in Orange County, has selected Southern California as one of four test markets for McSalad Shakers in an effort to pump up salad sales.

The salads quietly made their debut last month to allow participating restaurants a chance to work out any potential glitches. The new salads are packaged in a large, clear cup with a domed lid so that customers can pour in the dressing and toss it evenly.

“We had a low sell rate with the old versions, so now we are using different types of lettuce, different ingredients and new dressings,” said Tito Zamalloa, assistant marketing manager at McDonald’s corporate office in Los Angeles.

Advertising for the new chef, grilled chicken Caesar and garden salads began early this month.
