* A Senate panel approved legislation that would require establishment of a nationwide 911 number for emergency calls made from wireless and traditional phones. Many states and municipalities have separate emergency numbers for wireless phones. The bill, approved by the Senate Commerce Committee, would direct the Federal Communications Commission to help set up the single 911 emergency-response system to be used throughout the country. A similar measure passed the House in February. The Senate bill will move to the floor for a vote of the full Senate.
