The Slaying of Deputy Riches

Share

An officer of the law is shot and killed in an ambush (“O.C. Deputy Slain at Store,” June 13). A videotape permits the assailant to be arrested promptly. There is a witness. Would anyone be surprised to find, a year from now, the accused still in County Jail awaiting trial?

Is this not the cause of the so-called jail overcrowding? If we had a functioning justice system, and with evidence such as this available, the assailant would be tried and sentenced within 72 hours of his arrest.

This would also reduce the cost of the welfare system for lawyers known as public defenders, which permits lawyers to ask for a few extra months to determine if the accused had an unhappy childhood.

I want to thank you for your coverage of the services for Deputy Sheriff Brad Riches. I know Brad’s family would join us in expressing our appreciation. The outpouring of support from the community has deeply touched the members of our association.

The memorial at the scene of the shooting, the candlelight vigil and the citizens lining the route of the procession were very much appreciated.

The children of Lake Forest Elementary School who stood at the curb with signs of support reminded us all of the reason we have chosen a career in law enforcement and made it clear that Deputy Riches’ sacrifice will not be forgotten.
