SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A man was killed Sunday when he lost control of his car and was hit by a tour bus on the Santa Ana Freeway in Buena Park.

The crash occurred about 8:50 a.m. in the southbound lanes near the Artesia Boulevard offramp.

The driver was speeding when he tried to pass several cars and lost control of his white Chevrolet Malibu, California Highway Patrol Officer Denise Medina said.

The car ricocheted off the center divider and stopped perpendicular to traffic.

A tour bus headed for Tijuana slammed into the car and triggered a chain reaction when the bus driver tried to avoid the crash by swerving to the right.

The bus struck a Dodge Caravan, which was rear-ended by a Honda Civic.

None of the bus’ 27 passengers or the passengers in other cars were injured.

The driver of the Malibu died at Whittier Community Hospital.

Police are withholding the victim’s name until they notify family members. He was wearing a seat belt, and the car’s air bags were deployed.

All the freeway’s lanes heading south were closed for more than two hours as the CHP and fire crews investigated the crash, and workers cleaned up the debris.

No one was cited in the crash.
