Some broadcast and cable programs contain material included in the public school curriculum and on standardized examinations. Here are weekend home-viewing tips:

Today--”Anne of Green Gables” (DIS, 7-10:30 p.m.) This movie is true to Lucy Maude Montgomery’s classic novel about a girl growing up in rural Canada. VCR+904701. Also, “Around the World in 80 Days” (KVEA, 7-10 p.m.) This Spanish language edition of the Oscar-winning film may be an appropriate introduction to the Jules Verne adventure novel and provide Spanish-speaking students encouragement to read it in Spanish or English. David Niven and Cantinflas star. VCR+304121.

Friday--”Science Times” (TLC, 7-8 p.m.) This is a documentary survey of recent scientific research: the rain-forest canopy where plants live without contact with the earth, extreme ocean depths where life exists without light, and space, where astronauts must endure an alien environment. Also, “California’s Gold” (KCET, 7:30-8 p.m.) This installment of the regular KCET state history series includes an account of a Japanese submarine’s shelling of American petroleum facilities near Santa Barbara in 1942. Saturday--”Walker’s World-Egypt: Across the Sinai” (TRAV, 3-3:30 p.m.) This documentary describes a trip on camelback to examine geological and climatic conditions along the route of the biblical exodus--harsh then, harsh now. Anna Walker hosts. VCR+5139077

Sunday--”Mexico” (HIST 10 a.m.-3 p.m.) This four-part documentary series on Mexican history, newly produced by the History Channel, covers events from the founding of the Aztec empire to the era of NAFTA. Also, “Cleopatra’s Palace: In Search of a Legend” (DISC, 9-10 p.m.) This is a documentary about underwater archeological excavations conducted recently off the coast of Alexandria, Egypt. The palace that was the scene of Cleopatra’s suicide disappeared under the sea 1,500 years ago in an earthquake. Omar Sharif narrates. “Dance in America: Suzanne Farrell, Elusive Muse” (KCET-TV, 11 p.m.-12:30 a.m.) This documentary, presented as part of PBS’ “Great Performances” series, explores the life and work of an American prima ballerina and her complex relationship with choreographer George Balanchine.
