In other West Regional action, substitute Maren Walseth scored 22 points, Helen Darling scored 21 and Penn State outshot Virginia, 27-11, from the foul line in eliminating the Lady Cavaliers, 82-69, at Ruston, La. Lisa Shepherd added 13 points and Shawnta Vanzant had 11 for Penn State (22-7). Virginia (20-9) was led by Monick Foote with 13 points, Erin Stovall with 12 and DeMya Walker with 11. . . . Betty Lennox’s 15 points off the bench led six players in double figures and Louisiana Tech got 43 points from its bench in a 90-49 victory over Central Florida at Ruston. Both Tech (27-2) and Central Florida (20-10) got off to a miserable start. Tech hit only 14 of 41 field goals for 34% en route to a 35-20 halftime lead, while Central Florida made only four of 23 for 17.4%.

Martina Tinklova made two free throws with 16.7 seconds remaining and Maine (24-6) won for the first time in five trips to the women’s NCAA tournament, defeating Stanford, 60-58, at Norfolk, Va. The Cardinal end the season 18-12. . . . Aubrey Eblin found her stroke, and Old Dominion (27-3) rode her 14 points and 18 more from Lucienne Berthieu to a 74-48 victory against Tennessee Tech (21-9) at Norfolk, Va.

MIDEAST REGIONAL

Paige Sauer had 13 points and 11 rebounds in a dozen minutes as top-seeded Connecticut (28-4) dismantled St. Francis (Pa.), 97-46, at Storrs, Conn. The Huskies dominated from the opening tip with a smothering pressure defense, a speedy transition game and scored easily from any range against the 16th-seeded Red Flash (18-12). . . . Nicole Levandusky scored 23 points and Taru Tuukkanen added 19 to lead Xavier (24-8) over Florida International, 85-71, at Storrs. Dalma Ivanyi, a senior guard from Hungary, led the Golden Panthers (23-7) with 23 points. . . . Shaquala Williams and Angelina Wolvert each scored 16 points and Oregon (25-5) survived a long second-half cold spell to defeat Cincinnati, 65-56, at Ames, Iowa. Fifth-seeded Oregon built a 14-point lead by overpowering Cincinnati inside, then held off a comeback that got the 12th-seeded Bearcats (22-9) to within a point. Brianne Meharry added 14 points for No. 16-ranked Oregon, which matched its school record for victories in a season and moved into a second-round game Sunday night. Doris Scott’s 15 points led Cincinnati, which was playing in the NCAA tournament for just the second time. . . . Stacy Frese scored 31 points and Iowa State (23-7) withstood a 13-0 start by Santa Clara (22-7) to beat the Broncos, 74-61, at Ames. . . . Tauja Catchings driving basket with 1.7 seconds left lifted seventh-seeded Illinois (19-11) past 21-11 Louisville, 69-67, at Clemson, S.C.. . . . Natasha Anderson scored 15 of Clemson’s first 20 points and the Lady Tigers (25-5) opened the NCAA women’s tournament in dominating style, wiping out overmatched Florida A&M;, 76-45, at Clemson, S.C. Florida A&M; (18-12), the 15th seed, had won 10 of 12 games.

Dominique Canty scored 19 points to help Alabama (20-10) defeat Grambling, 80-68, at Chapel Hill, N.C. Termika Mitchell matched her season high of 31 points and Felicia James added 14 for Grambling (25-5), which shot only 28% from the field. . . . Juana Brown had two steals and hit back-to-back layups just 15 seconds apart to punctuate North Carolina’s 64-55 victory over Northeastern (22-8) at Chapel Hill, N.C. LaQuanda Barksdale had 13 points, while Brown and Chanel Wright each added 12 points for North Carolina (27-7). . . . LaKeisha Taylor put in a rebound with 30 seconds to play in overtime and Arizona (18-10) rallied from a 17-point, second-half deficit to defeat Florida, 87-84, at Piscatawy, N.J. The Wildcats scored the final eight points in overtime and got a buzzer-beating layup from Reshea Bristol at the end of regulation in ending the season for Florida (19-14). . . . Shawnetta Stewart scored all 15 of her points in the first half and keyed a game-opening 12-point spurt that led Rutgers (27-5) to an 84-70 victory over Dartmouth (19-9) at Piscataway, N.J.
