Stanley Kubrick

* I would like to thank Mike Downey for his touching March 10 column on Stanley Kubrick. It’s fitting that Kubrick, who has been consistently misunderstood and underappreciated by many, should have his untimely death upstaged by a sports figure.

As an English professor, for years I have used Kubrick’s films as a means to introduce to students the most profound and crucial problems of humanity and modern culture. Even today, with film audiences numb to just about everything, Kubrick is able to offend, but only because people find his messages disturbing.

After reading Downey’s article, I was pleased to discover that someone outside of the high-brow film circle acknowledges Kubrick’s important contributions to society--which extend beyond the realm of sports feats.
