Temple Coach John Chaney, on the depth of Duke, the Owls’ opponent in the East Regional final today: “In all my years, I’ve never seen a team that could bring in an apple for an apple.
“When we go to our bench, we take out an apple--and bring a lemon in.”
Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski has heard enough about Duke having enough players for two top-25 teams.
The Blue Devils have nine high school All-Americans, but use a rotation of eight.
“First of all, whoever says we have two teams did not pass math in college, high school or preparatory school,” Krzyzewski said, drawing a big laugh. “We have nine scholarship players. Our second team would not advance very far in the NCAA tournament. I would bet against it, if I were not opposed to gambling.
“We create the impression of waves, but we basically play eight players.”
