Titans Win 10th Game in a Row

Center fielder Reed Johnson had three hits, including a home run, and Shawn Norris drove in three runs to lead Cal State Fullerton to its 10th consecutive baseball victory, an 11-5 win over host Sacramento State.

Jon Smith (5-0) gave up five hits and struck out six in seven innings to get the victory for the 14th-ranked Titans (20-5, 5-0 in the Big West).

Fullerton scored a run in each of the first two innings, but Sacramento State (9-17, 2-6) scored two in the second on a two-run home run by designated hitter Daniel Harkness (two for four, two home runs, three runs batted in).

The Titans answered in the third as Johnson, who was three for four with three runs scored, led off with a homer and second baseman Norris capped the rally with a two-out, two-run single to put Fullerton ahead for good.

Titan left fielder Spencer Oborn (2-5) extended his hitting streak to 24 games, the second longest in school history after Brent Mayne, who had a 38-game streak in 1988.

In nonconference gymnastics:

Francis has career best--Kellie Francis scored a career-high 37.75 in the all-around to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 190.950-187.575 victory over San Jose State.

It was the best team score of the season for the Titans (8-8).

In the Kia Klassic softball tournament:

DePaul 5, Cal State Fullerton 2--Katie Carter hit her first career grand slam to cap a five-run first inning for DePaul (13-9). Liza Brown, a former Titan pitcher, earned the victory for DePaul with a complete game. Jana Oetgen pitched one inning and took the loss for Fullerton (15-12).

In the Fresno State track and field invitational:

Campbell wins--Cal State Fullerton’s Brandon Campbell took first in the long jump with a mark of 23 feet 3/4 inches. Campbell also finished third in the 400 meters (47.71 seconds). Paul Rubolo was third in the high jump (6-8). For the women’s team, Crystal Manning placed third in the 400-meter hurdles (1 minute 8.38 seconds) and Anna Doty was third in the triple jump (37-8).

In nonconference track and field:

Swamidass wins high jump--UC Irvine freshman Santosh Swamidass finished first in the high jump (6-9) in the four-way meet also involving UCLA, California and Washington at Sacramento State. Swamidass has won high jump in four of six meets this season.
