A single-engine plane crashed into a steep hillside in the San Bernardino National Forest on Monday, killing the pilot.

The pilot’s identity was not immediately known, but officials believed there was no one else aboard the Cessna 152, said San Bernardino County Fire Department spokeswoman Penni Overstreet-Murphy.

A witness said the plane went down about 1:30 p.m. behind a hill, sheriff’s representative Chip Patterson said.

The plane was found on a steep hillside in Cucamonga Canyon, north of Rancho Cucamonga, Overstreet-Murphy said. The pilot had left Cable Airport in nearby Upland about 1 p.m., she said.

Fire crews were working Monday afternoon to reach the wreckage, but officials said the steep, brush-filled terrain made it difficult.
