Seminar to Focus on Y2K

* Calvary Community Church in Westlake Village will host a daylong seminar today on the ramifications of Y2K, the year 2000 computer problem. The seminar begins at 9 a.m. and will include a vendors expo until 3 p.m. No pre-registration is required.

Handicapables Meetings Return

* After a year’s absence, Handicapables is back, with a west county meeting today at Ventura’s Knights of Columbus Hall.

This is a day of spiritual and social enrichment for all physically disabled people, said Armand Mueller, who helps run both the east county and west county Handicapables meetings.

Registration is at 11 a.m. today. Mass will be celebrated at 11:30, followed by lunch and entertainment. People of all faiths are welcome. There is no charge.

Ceremony for Passion Sunday

* St. Paschal Baylon Church in Thousand Oaks prepares to enter its holiest week on Passion Sunday at 10:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., when the community gathers in front of the church before Mass so everyone can make their entrance together.

Msgr. Joseph George will bless the community and the palm branches that congregants will carry.

Other Passion Sunday Masses are at 7:30 and 9 a.m. and at 12:15 p.m. in Spanish.

On Good Friday, the gospel portion of the service will be dramatized by junior high and high school youth at the 1 and 7:30 p.m. services.

Palm Sunday at St. Paul’s

* Palm Sunday worship begins at 10 a.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Oxnard. The congregation will gather on the patio for the procession of the palms into the sanctuary. The Rev. Alan Gorsline’s sermon will be “When Life Is Torn.” Church school for children and youth is at 9 a.m.

Maundy Thursday communion service will begin at 7 p.m.

On Good Friday, the St. Paul’s choir will perform a new cantata, “Tenebrae,” at the 7 p.m. service.

“The service follows a tradition of the church dating back to the eighth century,” Gorsline said. “ ‘Tenebrae’ is from the Latin word for ‘darkness’ and commemorates the final hours of Jesus’ life on earth. The gradual darkening of the church portrays the diminishing light of the world as Christ departed from it.”

Mission’s Passion Sunday

* At the San Buenaventura Mission in Ventura, Passion Sunday Masses will be held at 5:30 p.m. in English and 7:30 p.m. in Spanish today and at 7:30 a.m., 9 a.m. and noon in English and 10:30 a.m. in Spanish on Sunday.

Palms will be blessed in the mission garden 15 minutes before each of the Masses. Latin Mass will be at 1:30 p.m.

Children to Lead Palm Procession

* All Saints Episcopal Church in Oxnard will hold a palm procession led by children at its 11 a.m. service Palm Sunday. The reading of the Passion will also highlight the service.

All Saints will hold a combined service with Our Savior’s and Our Redeemer Lutheran churches of Oxnard at a special Easter vigil service at 7 p.m. April 3.

Passover Seder-Last Supper

* On Wednesday, the Hebrew calendar’s anniversary date of the Last Supper, the Camarillo Church of Religious Science will lead a Passover Seder--Last Supper. A typical Passover dinner will follow the services with St. Peter’s fish from the Holy Land, chicken, matzo and other Passover foods, said the Rev. Jacqueline Hollandof the church.

The Rev. Lawrence Vogel, a biblical scholar and expert on the Aramaic culture of Jesus, will share spiritual explanations of the prayers. The telling will be in English and the prayers in Hebrew.

Lenten Programs at St. Matthew’s

* Communion is offered at St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church in Newbury Park every Sunday during Lent.

Services during Lent are at 8:30 and 10 a.m. Maundy Thursday worship is at 7 p.m. Thursday; Good Friday interfaith worship is at noon on April 2, and Easter services on April 4 are at 6:30, 8:30 and 10 a.m.

Methodist Choir to Perform

* The chancel choir of the Bardsdale United Methodist Church in Fillmore will perform Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Mass in G Minor at 7 p.m. Friday. This is a free outreach from the church in recognition of Good Friday.

The Westmont Chamber Singers will perform “A Cappella From the Renaissance to the Present” at 7 p.m. April 18.

The choir, from Westmont College in Santa Barbara, will perform in the church’s 100-year-old sanctuary, which lies among the orange groves of the little community of Bardsdale.

Both events are free and open to the public.

Church Hosts Musical About Jesus

* The First Baptist Church of Camarillo invites the public to a special musical presentation, “The Way of the Cross--a Journey to Calvary” at 7 p.m. on Friday and at 10:30 a.m. on Easter Sunday.

The story is told from the perspectives of those who knew Jesus from childhood to Calvary. Dave Clark wrote the musical, which Associate Pastor Ray Buford is directing.

Good Friday and Easter Services

* Sonrise Christian Fellowship in Simi Valley will hold Good Friday services at 5:30 and 7 p.m. on Friday, with Senior Pastor Joe Woodruff speaking.

Mission to Celebrate Its Founding

* The San Buenaventura Mission will cap off its Holy Week services, which begin Sunday, with an informal observance of the mission’s 217th birthday on April 4.

The mission was founded by Junipero Serra on Easter Sunday in 1782, on the beach of the Santa Barbara Channel.

Easter Events at Moorpark Church

* Easter events are being planned at Moorpark’s Community Christian Church, including an Easter musical on April 4 and a special Friendship Sunday service, “Christ in the Passover,” on April 11.

Regular Sunday services are held at 9 and 10:45 a.m. at the church, with Bible school classes for preschool through junior high also at 9 and 10:45.

Holocaust Remembrance

* Temple Etz Chaim in Thousand Oaks will remember the Holocaust on April 9 at the 8:15 p.m. Sabbath service. Rabbi Shimon Paskow and Cantor Jeff Cohen will conduct the service.

Cantor emeritus Leopold Szneer will chant the traditional Kel Maleh Rachamim Memorial Prayer. The congregation will recite the Mourner’s Kaddish.
