Students Recognized for Justice Program
Students from Oxnard and Camarillo high schools who completed a countywide field study on the criminal justice system were recognized Tuesday afternoon during a ceremony at the Ventura County Courthouse.
The 11 high school juniors and seniors spent about 30 hours outside the classroom during March and April researching how a criminal case was processed in Ventura County from start to finish.
The Oxnard students are Rachael Roberts, Henry Hernandez, Antoinette Raibstein, Allen Hollowell, Diane Herman and Grace Turner; the Camarillo students are Jason Weiland, Jonathan Robbins, Alicia Ramos, Josh Kohlmeir and Andrew Goldstein.
During the program, the students met with county law enforcement officials, including the district attorney, public defender, judges and probation and police officers.
They visited the jail, looked through evidence, read probation reports and rode along with Oxnard police officers.
Students said the program gave them the opportunity to see first-hand how the criminal justice system works.
Several of the teens plan to pursue careers in the field.
