Newport Beach Tourist Drowns in Riptide
NEWPORT BEACH —
A 29-year-old tourist died Tuesday in the surf at Newport Beach, and a friend who tried to rescue him was hospitalized in fair condition, authorities said.
Yasoda Narahaki of Worcester, Mass., apparently was caught in a strong rip current and was about 500 feet from shore when he was found floating face-down in the surf.
The friend, Dhakta Balla, in his late 20s, foundered when he attempted a rescue. Lifeguards pulled Narahaki and Balla from the water.
